Q&A with Fred Arelt, CFE

Fred Arelt, CFE

Coach: When did you receive your CFE credential?

Arelt: I was certified on June 1, 2022.

Coach: Please describe your experience of attending the four-day CFE Exam Review Course in Chicago. What did you like most about the Review Course?

Arelt: The instructors were extremely knowledgeable and engaging. It was great to be in person, to be able to engage with others during breaks or meals. It was a very diverse group with unique backgrounds and experiences that made the experience even better. There is a lot of information. Having real-world examples to go along with the lessons is invaluable.

Coach: Please describe your experience of taking the CFE Exam each day after class.

Arelt: I don’t know many people that like taking exams—I know I don’t. If you have to take an exam, this is probably one of the best ways to do it. You’re tested on the material that is covered that day. The information is fresh in your mind, but it does make for a long day. There is also the benefit of knowing whether you passed the day you take the exam.

Coach: Did you review the CFE Exam Prep Course prior to attending the Review Course? If so, how often did you study?

Arelt: Yes, I went through the course and used the CFE Exam Prep Flashcard App. I went a section at a time, usually taking a few days for each section for a couple of hours a day. The Prep Course is good to get an overall understanding of the material, and I would recommend completing it prior to attending the course. The Flashcard App is good for definitions and review. I would use the Flashcard App during downtime instead of checking social media.

Coach: In what ways do you feel that your new CFE credential will be beneficial to you in your current profession?

Arelt: It’s already been beneficial. I am a Compliance and Ethics Officer. The CFE credential has added to my abilities to deter, detect, and defend against all types of risk to an organization. The CFE credential gives an individual credibility when conducting investigations or assessments that others may not have.

Coach: Would you recommend the Review Course to your colleagues?

Arelt: Yes, I attended the course after one of my colleagues completed the online course during the pandemic. I have recommended the in-person course to others in my organization.

Coach: How did you become passionate about fighting fraud?

Arelt: As a former law enforcement and academic professional, I have always been interested in why people commit crimes and how to deter this behavior. The interest in and study of fraud was a natural progression.

Coach: Now that we know what you do professionally, what do you like to do for fun and what do you find enjoyable about it?

Arelt: I enjoy traveling, but it has to be with others. Whether it’s with family or friends, somewhere I’ve never been, or somewhere I’ve been many times, it’s always a new experience.

Coach: Do you have any study tips or suggestions for aspiring CFEs?

Arelt: I would recommend completing the Prep Course and attending the Review Course in person. The instructors are a great resource; show up with questions.
